I use print a lot in my work. I like the unique qualities I can achieve with the technology, and the associations printed ceramics carry. Printed ceramics traditionally carry images of fantasy, pastoral landscapes; or they commemorate events or places. I like to commemorate events or places too...

Hayvend is an art installation created by John Hayward. It vends specially produced, pocket sized, artworks, in the form of drawings, multiples, prints and limited editions. All the artworks are mixed together in each Hayvend Installation and dispensed randomly, a unique way of buying art. All the artworks are affordable, as well as desirable and collectable, making the Hayvend experience last long after the coins drop and the draw opens. John believes that art can be ubiquitous, so that everyone can enjoy.

Anya Gallaccio at the Camden Arts Centre

Hello! I haven't posted anything for at least a week now, I'm really sorry. It has been a very busy and stressful week, but I'm back now!

And it's a good one to kick off with. Another of my favourite artists, Anya Gallaccio, has a show on a the Camden Arts Centre in London until September 14th. I'm off to see it tonight and on summer Wednesday nights they are having a lovely barbecue from 6pm til 8:30pm in their wonderful garden... Yum!

Anya Gallaccio's spectacular new installation connects Camden Arts Centre's garden to the galleries, bringing the outdoors inside.

The new piece is firmly rooted in the site, as if nature has broken into the space pushing through the gallery floor and walls. Using organic transient materials, Gallaccio’s intervention is impressive in its visual impact and physicality.

Gallaccio is one of the leading British sculptors of her generation. Nominated for the Turner Prize in 2003, she graduated from Goldsmiths in 1988 and in the same year exhibited in Damien Hirst’s 'Freeze', the exhibition that brought together a generation of Young British Artists for the first time.

Gallaccio's work is concerned with nature, beauty and decay, she uses ephemeral materials to refer to the cyclic nature of life and death.

Her sculptures' multi-sensory and experimental elements allow you to engage with the rich tactile qualities. Past installations include real chocolate and sugar, rotting and decayed fruit, and trees cast in bronze.

Annette Messager

My last post just reminded me to post a couple of images of Annette Messager's work. She was probably the first artist to ignite my passion for art and so I feel a sentimental pang when I look at these images now. Here is an interview with her from the Journal of Contemporary Art.

Jade Pegler

Now, I have posted a couple of images of Jade Pegler's work before but after looking some more at her work today I felt I wanted to mention her again. Jade is an Australian artist who works with "paper and textiles [and] combines a range of techniques including papiermache, bookbinding, hand and machine stitching, collage and origami" (from website). Jade's books are obsessively and intricately worked into and experimental in form. The combination of tying, stitching, cutting, drawing and folding is something I would like to play with more in my own work. Her quirky and delicate drawings and sculptures are beautiful, tactile and absurd, and I love the photos of her workspaces. Her piece Proscenium Machinium reminds me of another of my all time favourite artists Annette Messager... that reminds me...

What I Made this Weekend.

A new artists' book entitled Conversations with Painters, a deconstructed and reconstructed book. I think it might be the start of a short series. What do you think?

It has been one of those beautiful, atmospheric, rainy days here today.

I feel inspired today. Oh yes! Hopefully I will get plenty of work done this weekend. It's probably about time I shared some of it. Tonight I am going to the 'Lates' event at the British Library. They're having an Independence Day celebration and my American partner is very keen to go. Hopefully I will get to eat some Buffalo Wings... sigh... how I miss those!

This morning I remembered Nazraeli Press' One Picture Book series from my time working at the Bookart Bookshop in London. I wish I had truly appreciated the opportunity I had to swoon over them at the time. Each book in this mouthwatering series of 5 by 7", 16 page books contains an original print and around eight reproductions, there are 500 numbered and signed copies of each title. How amazing would it be to have the complete collection all lined up on your shelf?


I'm going to get my hair cut in a minute... Maybe I'll take this picture...
